Inside the ASK Creative Session at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ)

There’s a specific kind of magic that happens on a weekday evening in Keyport when the workday is winding down and the town starts to settle into its after-hours rhythm. If you wander into the right corner of town, you’ll find a group of people hunched over notebooks, sipping something caffeinated, and talking about things that don't involve "deliverables" or "KPIs."

This is the heart of the Arts Society of Keyport (ASK) Creative Sessions at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ).

It’s not just a meeting. It’s not quite a class. It’s something much more vital to the soul of our town. It’s a space where the "What Ifs" of our community finally get written down. Whether it’s a sketch for a new mural, a draft of a poem, or just a plan for a local gallery night, these sessions are where Keyport’s creative pulse actually beats, right from our headquarters.

The Vibe: Coffee, Notebooks, and No Pressure

Walking into one of our sessions at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ), the first thing you’ll notice is the atmosphere. It’s intentionally low-stakes. We aren't here to critique your technique or demand a masterpiece before the night is over. We’re here to hold space for each other.

You’ll see tables scattered with handwritten notebooks, half-finished pens, and plenty of caffeine. Most of these creative sessions typically run from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, when that late-night creative spark tends to kick in. There’s something deeply satisfying about the tactile nature of these evenings. In a world that is increasingly digital, sitting down at a shared table at ASK headquarters with a physical notebook feels like a quiet act of rebellion.

Collaborative energy during an ASK writing and planning workshop

These sessions are the "engine room" for everything we do. When you see a new art installation in town or attend one of our annual events, there’s a high chance the seeds for that idea were planted right here at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ), amidst the clinking of ice cubes and the scratching of pencils.

Finding "Your People" in the Bayshore

Here is the "something interesting" that people don't often realize about ASK: these sessions aren't actually about the art. Or, at least, they aren't only about the art.

They are about building a bridge.

For many of us, especially those who work from home or have recently moved to the Monmouth County area, finding a community can be tough. It’s easy to feel like a "resident" but much harder to feel like a "neighbor." The Creative Sessions at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ) act as a social glue. We’ve seen lifelong friendships form over a shared tray of watercolors. We’ve seen local business owners connect with designers to transform their storefronts.

When we say "everyone is welcome," we really mean it. You don't need a portfolio. You don't need to know the difference between acrylics and gouache. Some of our most valued members are people who just want to doodle while they chat about local history or community projects. It’s about finding "your people": the dreamers, the doers, and the folks who believe that a town is defined by its culture.

More Than Just a Sketchbook: The Collaborative Spirit

While some people come to work on their individual projects, the real power lies in collaboration. It’s common to see a photographer leaning over a writer’s shoulder, or a crafter helping a local organizer brainstorm a new community project.

We believe that creativity is a team sport. By bringing different perspectives to the table, literally: we solve problems in ways we never could alone. That collaborative exchange is what makes ASK creative planning sessions at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ) so useful, giving local artists, organizers, and neighbors room to develop ideas together.

The tactile beauty of creative planning and handwritten notes

There is something about these kinds of creative planning sessions that breaks down the barriers we usually carry. At the table, your job title doesn't matter. Your age doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is the idea in front of you and the person sitting across from you.

Why We Do It: The ASK Mission

The Arts Society of Keyport is a non-profit, but we like to think of ourselves as a community resource directory for the imagination. Our goal is to make art accessible. We want to strip away the "elitism" that sometimes surrounds the art world and replace it with something simple, local, and fun.

By hosting these sessions, we are investing in the "Creative Capital" of Keyport. When artists feel supported, the whole town wins. Property values go up, local businesses thrive, and: most importantly: people are happier.

If you’ve been looking for a reason to get out of the house and try something new, this is it. You can check out our upcoming events to see when the next gathering at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ) is happening.

A Final Thought from the Table

By the end of the night, Keyport is still doing what it does best: moving, changing, and making room for new ideas. The Arts Society of Keyport is here to make sure that as we grow, we don't lose our creative soul.

The notebooks we fill during these evening sessions are the blueprints for the Keyport of tomorrow. We’d love for you to add a page or two. Whether you’re an expert artist or just someone who likes a good cup of coffee and a great conversation after hours, there is always a seat saved for you at Keyport Funhouse (ASK HQ).

See you at the next session!
